She joined the ATNF as a Bolton Fellow in 2001 after completing her Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota working with John Dickey. Her research focuses on the structure and dynamics of neutral hydrogen (HI) in the Milky Way. She entered this field with her Ph.D. project the Southern Galactic Plane Survey (SGPS) an HI survey of the more than 1/4 of the disk of the Milky Way. She has used the SGPS to study large-scale structures in the interstellar medium such as HI supershells and chimneys and to find a new spiral arm in the Galactic 'outback.
