Lyman-alpha Forest as a Cosmological Probe

Matteo Viel is a PPARC postdoctoral fellow at the Institute of Astronomy
in Cambridge (United Kingdom) and research fellow at Clare Hall College (Cambridge).
He was born in Udine (Italy). He got his Laureate Degree at the Physics Department of
Padova University in 1999 and his Ph.D. in 2002 working with Sabino Matarrese on
numerical models for the Intergalactic Medium. During his Ph.D. he collaborated with
Houjun Mo at the Max-Planck-Institute for Astrophysics in Garching and with M.
Haehnelt T.-S. Kim T. Theuns and J. Ostriker at the Institute of Astronomy in Cambridge.
His main research interest is the study of the Lyman-alpha forest as a cosmological probe
to recover fundamental physical properties of our universe. He is also interested in metal
enrichment by galactic winds the evolution of the UV background and the physical properties
of the intergalactic gas in the local universe.
