"Probing the Cosmic History of Star Formation in Galaxies with the Herschel Space Observatory and CCAT" In the 1990s an unresolved far-infrared background radiation of
extragalactic origin was discovered, with integrated flux at the Earth
approximately equal to all the extragalactic optical and ultraviolet
starlight reaching Earth. This radiation is dust-reprocessed starlight
that arose from star formation in
distant, high-redshift galaxies. The vast quantity of the
unaccounted radiation implied that our picture of
galaxy formation was very incomplete. I will present submillimeter
observations with the Herschel Space Observatory to characterize
dusty, high-redshift galaxies and molecular gas in nearby star-forming galaxies.
Then I will discuss the CCAT observatory - a 25 m diameter submillimeter telescope we are designing to
build atop a mountain in the Atacama Desert in Chile. I will discuss some
of the detector technology breakthroughs that promise to enable CCAT
