"The History of Massive Galaxy Formation as a Cosmological Tool" In this talk I will discuss the properties and evolution of the most massive galaxies as seen in several recent high redshift surveys, including the GOODS NICMOS Survey (GNS), UKIDDS, and the CANDELS survey. I will discuss how we are now able to trace with precision the role of major mergers, star formation, and for the first time measurements of minor mergers, in the formation of massive galaxies at z < 3. I will further show that modes besides these are needed to form galaxies, and will argue that gas accretion from the intergalactic medium is an important method for adding mass to the most massive galaxies, and potentially a major new part of the galaxy formation process. I will show furthermore how these observations are able to start constraining in a new way both the dominant model of galaxy formation, based on a lambda cold dark matter universe, as well as being a potential new test of the cosmological properties of the universe itself.
