"Black Holes and Neutron Stars in the Local Universe" I will discuss some recent developments in understanding the formation
of binary stars with black holes and neutron stars. These particular
objects are present across the electromagnetic spectrum (from Galactic
micro-quasars to X-ray binaries) and are expected to be the prime source
candidates for gravitational wave experiments (LIGO/VIRGO, eLISA).
The population of double compact objects include nine known NS-NS
binaries, while no BH-NS nor BH-BH systems have yet been discovered.
I will identify and describe known X-ray binaries that may potentially
form these enigmatic objects and what are the near future chances of
their detection. I will also touch on the issue of the maximum mass of
stellar-origin black holes and the implications for ultra-luminous X-ray
sources. Finally, I will describe the first potential explanation of the
mysterious "mass gap" that is observed between neutron stars and black
holes with no compact objects in mass range 2-5 Msun. University of Warsaw and University of Texas, Brownsville host: Milos Milosavljevic |
