Qualifying Exam/2nd Year Defense "Formation of Massive Star Clusters - an Application of Monte Carlo Radiation Hydrodynamics" Interacting galaxies such as ULIRGs and submillimeter galaxies are observed or expected to host "super" star clusters with millions of solar masses, but the formation mechanism remains an open question. In these clusters, thousands of massive, young stars are packed within sizes only a few parsec across. The intense radiation fields are dynamically important in shaping the interstellar medium from which the clusters are formed. However, numerical tools capable of handling these interactions with sufficient accuracy are not yet adequate. My project focuses on developing a Monte Carlo radiation hydrodynamic module in the adaptive mesh refinement hydrodynamic code FLASH. It is capable of simulating star formation on sub-pc scales and treating the transfer and reprocessing of stellar radiation in dense dusty gas. The prospect for identifying the dominant physical processes in massive cluster formation will be discussed.
