Qualifying Exam/2nd Year Defense "The Lyman-alpha Signature of the First Galaxies" Understanding the high-redshift frontier is one of the primary goals of modern cosmology. Increasingly sophisticated simulations and next-generation observatories, such as the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), allow us to 'shed light on the cosmic Dark Ages.' We present the Cosmic Lyman-alpha Transfer code (COLT) to simulate Lyman-alpha resonant scattering through neutral hydrogen as a probe of the first galaxies. We approach the question of how high luminosity Lyman-alpha sources interact with their host environments in the presence of realistic density profiles, ionization structure, and bulk velocity fields. We employ mesh refinement to resolve star formation sites within atomic cooling halos and discuss the emergent spectra and surface brightness profiles obtained from these objects.
