Tinsley Visiting Professor "Adventures in Cosmic Star Formation" For nearly 20 years, extragalactic astronomers have sought to measure the co-moving density of star formation in the universe and how it evolves with time. This "cosmic star formation history" sweeps many important details of galaxy evolution under the rug, but there is virtue in simplicity as well: it provides a fundamental description of the conversion of baryons from gas to stars over cosmic time. I will review past work and the current status of measurements of the cosmic star formation history (and other related quantities), discussing recent progress using multiwavelength surveys, and highlighting weaknesses of the current data and analysis. I will try to make connections between this "blunt instrument" and more detailed demographic studies of the galaxy population that may tell us more about the physics of galaxy growth.
