Grading Basis

multiple generations in the tarantula nebula Course grades will be awarded on a point system. There is no quota on "A's" or "B's" in this class; your course grade will be based on your performance. The semester grade will be largely determined by five in-class quizzes during the semester (multiple-choice format, with a few short essays to be used as "tie-breakers" for borderline grades). The four best quiz scores will be counted, at 20 points per quiz, for a total of up to 80 points. If you miss a quiz, that is the one that will be dropped. (Any further adjustments will require documented proof of a valid non-academic reason and will be at the instructor's discretion.) The other 20% will be based on participation credit for activities, mostly in class but some that can be done outside of class. More than 20 points worth of opportunities will be provided to earn participation credit, but no more than 20 points will be counted.
Grade Equivalences:
  A = 90-100 points
  B = 80-89
  C = 70-79
  D = 60-69
  F < 60
I am planning to use eGradebook, a brand-new feature in UTDirect, to enable you to easily track your progress and grade. Since this is the first semester that this software will be in use, watch out for possible bugs and glitches!

The following are the probable dates of the in-class quizzes. These are subject to change, except for Quiz # 5. Finalized dates will be announced at least a week in advance and posted on the class website.
Quiz # 1 - Wed., Feb. 5
Quiz # 2 - Wed., Feb. 26
Quiz # 3 - Wed., Mar. 26
Quiz # 4 - Wed., Apr. 16
Quiz # 5 - Fri., May 2 (last class day) - will not be changed
Getting Help

The Professor and Teaching Assistant will be available for office hours several times a week, and usually by appointment if those times do not work for you. We also plan to hold discussion/help sessions before the quizzes. In addition, there will be a page on our class web site for "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) which will provide answers to the most common student questions.

How to Do Well in this Course (Instructor's Hints)
  • Come to class regularly; stay current on the material and readings
  • Use the posted Power Point slides as tools for following the lecture
  • Earn all of your participation credits: there will be more than enough opportunities to earn the maximum 20 points through the activities
  • Ask questions when you don't understand: come to office hours or help sessions, send e-mail, check the FAQ's on the website
