We have used TEXES the Texas Echelon-cross-Echelle Spectrograph (Lacy et al. 2002) on the
NASA IRTF to search for pure rotational molecular hydrogen (H) emission from young stars with disks.
From the ground three pure rotational transitions of molecular hydrogen are accessible J=3-1 J=4-2 and J=6-4.
To this point, studies of gas in protoplanetary disks have focused on either small radii using near-infrared CO
emission (Najita et al. 2003) as a probe or on large radii with observations in the millimeter wavelength range
(Semenov et al. 2005).
Observations of molecular emission in the mid-IR offer the potential to study gas in disks at intermediate radii
(1-10 AU). Molecular H can be a useful probe because it makes up most of the mass in the disk and therefore allows
for mass determinations, which avoid CO - molecular H conversion factors. When coupled with knowledge of the
stellar mass and inclination of the system the high-resolution observations (~60000 for J=3-1 ~80000 for J=4-2
and J=6-4) allow us to study the line profile and determine the radial location of the emission. In the case of AB Aur
we have detected J=4-2 emission with FWHM of 7 km/s. Assuming an inclination of 20 degrees puts the emission
near 15 AU in the disk.
