The H II Region of the First Star
Marcelo A. Alvarez, University of Texas at Austin
abstract
Numerical simulations of the formation of the first stars predict that they formed at
redshifts z > 20 in minihalos with masses of about 106 Msun. These first stars
produced ionizing radiation that heated the surrounding gas and affected subsequent cosmological
structure formation while at the same time contributing to the reionization of the universe. In order
to understand these radiative feedback effects in detail we have undertaken 3D simulations of the
propagation of an ionization front around massive Population III stars (M ~ 15-500 Msun)
that form at a redshift z = 20. We follow the evolution of the H II region created by the star within the
density distribution resulting from a cosmological N-body/SPH simulation of primordial star formation.
If the star is massive enough the ionization front escapes the halo and propagates into the surrounding
intergalactic medium. We describe the structure and evolution of this H II region present, results for the
dependence of escape fraction on stellar mass and discuss implications for reionization and subsequent
star formation.
