"Early Galaxies: Alive, Dead, Transitioning and/or Active"

A decade of deep field studies, expanding in wavelength from the optical to the near-, mid- and far-infrared, is culminating in a complete census of the massive galaxy population during the epoch when the cosmic star formation activity peaked. We are no longer in the stamp collecting phase, but are uncovering the physical nature of high-redshift galaxies in terms of their structure, kinematics, stellar and gaseous content, as well as accretion behavior. I will present a status update on our understanding of the star-forming and quiescent population, the transitionary phase that links them, and clues on the co-evolution of galaxies and black holes in the distant universe.
