11:10-11:35	Trying to Fit Broad Absorption Lines into a Big Picture Broad absorption line troughs are present in at least 1 in 5 quasars, but much about them, including how they relate to the BLR, is not yet well understood. I will discuss the big-picture implications of some recent work on BAL quasars. In particular, multiple-epoch studies of dozens of newly appeared BAL troughs (including one at 60,000 km/s) show that variability can occur down to timescales of days, and two-epoch studies of hundreds of BAL quasars show that widely separated troughs tend to vary together. This seems to indicate ionizing flux variability, but what can we learn about the BELR and the BALR from observed BAL variability? Must ionizing flux variations be large, or can observed BAL ions be trace components of very highly ionized flows? Last but not least, the discovery of redshifted broad absorption lines in a handful of objects might arise from rotation or infall, but the required properties are difficult to account for in current models. close Patrick Hall York University	RLM 15.216B
