Incorporating the Narrow-Line Region into a Coherent View of the Central Engine Though quasar spectra in general are remarkably similar over a wide range of redshift and luminosity, systematic trends in emission-line properties such as the Baldwin Effect and the eigenvector 1 correlations are well-known. The eigenvector 1 correlations in particular linking broad-emission line properties such as the width of Hâ and the strength of FeII to the strength of [OIII] are puzzling given the huge differences in physical scale of the emitting regions. The narrow-line region (NLR) - on kpc scales - is revealing the host galaxy interstellar medium rather than the immediate vicinity of the central engine probed by the broad lines. Our goal is to separate the nature of the central engine - probed empirically by continuum luminosity and the broad Hâ emission line - from the properties of the NLR. We present the results from studies of narrow emission lines in the mid-infrared and optical that reveal how the observed properties of these lines are primarily sensitive to luminosity and contributions from the host galaxy, and secondarily to the spectral energy distribution.
