Course Description

The Age of Exploration has moved from the seas of Earth to the mountains and craters of Mars, to the hydrocarbon lakes of Titan, to the seared surface of Mercury, to the water oceans beneath the frozen surfaces of the moons of Jupiter, and to the bits and pieces left over from the formation of our Solar System. Come explore the places we now visit with our robotic emissaries, places your grandchildren might someday explore in person. Not exotic enough? We'll also explore planetary systems around other stars. Have we already found a Pandora and a Tatooine? Could they sustain life as we know it? Could something like our species exist out there?

Grades will be based on a final exam, three in-class exams, 10-14 in-class pop quizzes, and homework assignments.
