Title: Capabilities of the James Webb Space Telescope

Author(s): John C. Mather

Abstract: The JWST (James Webb Space Telescope) is the planned successor to the Hubble Space Telescope, to extend the HST discoveries to greater distances and longer wavelengths. I will review the observing capabilities and design features of the JWST for the observations of the first stars and galaxies, including wavelength ranges, spectral and spatial resolution, sensitivities, and limitations. Instruments cover from 0.6 to 28+ microns with imaging, filters, and spectroscopy with resolutions from 100 to 3000. The JWST will be operated at the Space Telescope Science Institute, and observing proposals will be solicited beginning about 1 year before launch.
