I have developed a series of high-resolution mid-infrared astronomical spectrographs (R->100,000 at 5-25um). My motivation was primarily for the study of the interstellar medium, but they have also proven to be useful for studies of planetary atmospheres and protoplanetary disks. Two of my PhD students have studied the stratospheres of the outer planets, and much of my recent observations has been of molecules (H2, H2O, C2H2, NH3) in protoplanetary disks. Recently I have been working on modeling the spectra of disks to allow us to derive their chemical and physical properties from our observations.
