SPECIAL PRESENTATION: "Composite Bulges: The Coexistence of Classical Bulges and Disky Pseudobulges in Disk Galaxies" (host: Eva Noyola)

I will discuss a recent study of several nearby S0 and spiral galaxies, for which a combination of imaging data, spectroscopy, and dynamical modeling reveals two distinct central stellar components: a disklike, kinematically cool pseudobulge *and* an embedded spheroidal, kinematically hot "classical" bulge. This means that pseudobulges, which are usually supposed to form via internal secular evolution, and classical bulges, usually thought to form from rapid mergers, are not mutually exclusive phenomena: some galaxies can have both. Preliminary evidence suggests that in such galaxies, supermassive black holes are correlated with the mass of the classical bulge, not the pseudobulge. I will also discuss progress from recent simulations in which large-scale nuclear disks form from bar-driven gas inflow; these agree well with the observed pseudobulge components.
