(host: J. Craig Wheeler) "SN1987A Environmental Impact Statement"

Supernova 1987A is surrounded by a complex system of gas and dust that was expelled by its progenitor, which was probably a binary system. The most prominent feature is the triple ring system, but there is more. The supernova debris is now crashing into the inner ring, resulting in a spectacular display at radio, optical, X-ray, and infrared wavelengths. After a brief review of the evolution of SN1987A, I'll describe what we are learning about its circumstellar environment from observations of this impact with the Hubble Space Telescope, VLT, Chandra, and the ALMA.
