(host: Paul Shapiro) "How First Stars Initiated Cosmic Reionization: Theory and Observation in the Era of Planck and the Square Kilometre Array"
First Stars are believed to be the very first astrophysical sources in the Universe. These stars form by hydrogen-molecule cooling predominantly inside mini-halos. Ultraviolet photons from these stars ionize surrounding atoms and form individual H II regions, which marks the "Cosmic Dawn" or the early phase of cosmic reionization. We present a suite of simulation results that modeled cosmic reionization in a large volume, ~(150 Mpc)^3, but also covering the full dynamical range of star-hosting halos, and show that first stars may have played a very important role in the history of reionization. We show that how the 2D sky map of polarization anisotropy of cosmic microwave background, measured by Planck, can be used to quantify the contribution of first stars to reionization. We also suggest that highly-clustered first stars and their impact on the intergalactic medium can be directly probed through a 3D imaging observation by the Square Kilometre Array.
