Zooniverse is the most widely used and successful platform for crowdsourcing research tasks, with 37 active projects across the sciences and humanities and over 1.34 million volunteers worldwide. Processing our increasingly large datasets (e.g., image, audio, video, hyper spectral data, etc.) poses a bottleneck for producing real scientific outcomes. Citizen science – engaging the public in research – provides a solution, particularly when coupled with machine learning algorithms and sophisticated task allocation and retirement rules. In this talk, I will describe how the Zooniverse citizen science platform is engaging volunteers to produce real research across the disciplines. To date, Zooniverse projects have published over 100 peer-reviewed publications. Faced with a rapidly growing demand for citizen science projects, the Zooniverse has launched a new ‘Project Builder’ which allows you, the researcher, to build your own project using the Zooniverse infrastructure and tools.
