(host: Steve Finkelstein) "Origin and Evolution of High-Redshift Infrared-Luminous Galaxies"

Infrared-luminous galaxies contribute to more than 70% of the total star formation rate density when the universe is only 25% of its current age. However, it remains unclear whether these intense star formation are triggered by mergers or the elevated gas supply in the early universe. In this talk, I will present our efforts to characterize the optical morphology for >2000 z~1 IR-luminous galaxies selected by Herschel, and a systematic comparison with their local IRAS-selected counterparts. These studies allow us to determine the significance of mergers out to z>1 and probe the evolution of IR-luminous galaxies from z~0 to z~1. Based on our work on the local IR-luminous galaxies and idealized merger simulations, I will demonstrate the limitations of using optical morphology and kinematics as a probe for the merger/disk nature of high-z star-forming galaxies. A refined merger/disk indicator or classification scheme is still need for a better interpretation of future integral field spectroscopic and submillimeter observations.
