"Probing Lyman-alpha Emitting Galaxies through their Resolved Lyman-alpha Emission"
I present the preliminary results of Magellan/IMACS deep, multi-object spectroscopic observations of twenty-five 2 < z < 3.5 Lyman-alpha emitting galaxies in the COSMOS field. With a spectral resolution of 150 km/s FWHM, we resolve the Lyman-alpha emission line profiles of these galaxies and observe an assortment of velocity structure due to the resonant scattering of Lyman-alpha photons in the galaxies' interstellar and cirumgalactic media. The structure includes varying degrees of asymmetry, a range of line widths, and a varying number of emission peaks with a range of velocity separations. Through parametric fitting of the line profiles, we quantify the range of observed structure and find evidence of a correlation between a combination of parameters describing the shape of the strongest emission line component and its velocity offset from the galaxy systemic redshift. Recent simulations have predicted a similar trend that is driven by the neutral hydrogen column density as a general property of Lyman-alpha radiative transfer in anisotropic gas distributions.
