SUBJECT:Survey of observational and theoretical results and problems concerning AGN. Material includes types of AGN, emission lines, continuum, accretion onto black holes, radio properties, host galaxies, unification schemes, and QSOs as probes of the intergalactic medium.
TEXTBOOK:Julian Krolik, Active Galactic Nuclei, unpublished manuscript. Supplementary reading in Bradley M. Peterson, An Introduction to Active Galactic Nuclei, and in various reviews and journal articles.
GRADING:Based on three closed-book exams and homework, subject to satisfactory class participation (attendance, journal talks, etc.). Format of Exam 2 subject to negotiation.
15% Exam 1 -- Feb. 13 (Wednesday)
25% Exam 2 -- April 1 (Wednesday)
35% Final Exam -- May 14 (Thursday), 9:00-12:00 a.m.

HOMEWORK:To be written up and handed in one week after assignment. Solutions will be provided after assignment is handed in. Students may discuss homework but should write up solutions individually. As a team, the class will prepare a set of corrections to and suggestions for improving the Krolik book.
TALKS:One student each week will review a journal article in class for about 30 minutes including discussion.
