Simulating Galaxy Structure within LCDM

Understanding the origin of galaxy morphologies is one of the foremost questions yet to be answered in the studies of galaxy formation. The leading paradigm in galaxy formation within LCDM provides a viable model to explain the main components of galaxies like bulges, disks, stellar and gaseous halos. However, it requires a delicate fine-tuning of mass accretion, star formation and feedback to recreate realistic galaxies in simulations. Does the Universe require such balancing acts or are we excluding relevant physics that resolves this fine-tuning problem? I will review the current status of numerical simulations in galaxy formation and compare them to observations of stellar/gas mass, morphology and star formation histories, as a function of environment and time.
