Primary Facilities in Austin
Common multi-user workstations and resources:
- astro - Sun Ultra Enterprise 3501 w/ Gigabit Ethernet. Solaris 2.7. Four 400MHz CPUs with a total of 4 GB of
memory. 21-inch monitor, console accessible in RLM 16.304. 180 GB of available disk space. It serves as the main departmental
mail server and provides data reduction services for users without adequate access to private workstations. It also hosts a variety
of tape drives (listed in detail below), all of which are available for user archiving and data restoration. Disk space usage is
governed by a quota system and the scratch areas (/data[1-5]/astro) are purged weekly of files that have not changed in two
months. Suitable applications for astro include code development, data reduction and number crunching, document preparation,
electronic mail, and printing.
- ceres - Sun Ultra 5. Solaris 2.7. 128 MB of memory with a 21-inch monitor. RLM 16.304. This system offers access to a
Solaris desktop environment as well as a 9 GB local disk (/data1/ceres) governed by a 1-month purging scheme. Login usernames
and passwords are frequently synchronized to those on astro.
- vesta - Sun Ultra 5. Solaris 2.7. 128 MB of memory with a 21-inch monitor. RLM 16.304. This system offers access to a
Solaris desktop environment as well as a 9 GB local disk (/data1/vesta) governed by a 1-month purging scheme. Login usernames and
passwords are frequently synchronized to those on astro.
- Public PC and Macintosh Workstations - RLM 16.304. Currently, the computer lab contains four Windows PCs and two Macintoshes
for general use. Available software applications include Microsoft Office, Mozilla, a secure shell client, Adobe Acrobat, ghostview.
Two windows machines, velma and scrappy, contain a supplemental configuration which includes an HP ScanJet 6200C color scanner, OCR software,
and Photoshop. These machines are provided so that intermittent use of other operating systems can take place without requiring
duel boot systems to be placed in Windows mode. These machines are for astronomy department users and applications only. Do
not install personal applications software on these systems.
- Departmental modem pool - We operate a small pool of 33.6kbps dial-in modems which can be accessed by dialing
471-6952. They support PPP connections to the departmental network as well as telnet sessions to astro. If you would like an account,
please see Chris Wilkinson. It is recommended that you not rely on them as your primary source of internet access. The University
Computer Center also maintains a bank of thousands of modems ("UT Telesys") with SLIP and PPP support, permitting remote access
from home. The modem number is 475-9996 and the service costs about $110 yearly. See Mae Collins in RLM 15.320G to sign up
for this service. You will need a university account number for the yearly fee.
