Colloquia Schedule Fall 2015
Colloquia are on Tuesdays (unless otherwise indicated) at 3:30 pm in RLM 15.216B
No Colloquium scheduled. |
"Convection in Cool Stars, as Revealed through Stellar Brightness Variations" Pennsylvania State University host: Adam Kraus or Bill Cochran |
"Compact Objects in Globular Clusters" Compact objects in globular clusters are tracers of dynamical evolution of star clusters. They may also be the progenitors of exciting astrophysics events such as mergers between compact objects. I will discuss a few key results in this area, focusing on the discoveries of stellar mass black holes in globular clusters in our own Galaxy and nearby galaxies I will talk about the theoretical models that predicted such objects would not exist, and the observational evidence that they do exist. I will also show some additional new evidence for a double white dwarf system in our own Galactic globular cluster system which shows an orbital period of 18 minutes. Texas Tech host: Karl Gebhardt |
"Convection in Low-Mass Stellar Evolution, or 'What about magnetic fields?' " University of Uppsala, Sweden host: Andrew Mann |
"Tracing the Cosmic Shutdown of Star Formation in Massive Galaxies" Hubble Fellow, UMass Amherst host: Steve Finkelstein |
