LCOGTN one-meter telescope dedicated, running automated observations
LCOGTN 1-meter telescope at McDonald Observatory
The first of a series of one-meter telescopes being built by the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network (LCOGTN) was dedicated and is operating on Mount Fowlkes at McDonald Observatory.
LCOGTN staff scientist and University of California Santa Barbara adjunct faculty member Dr. Andy Howell (a University of Texas at Austin graduate, who was also one of the hosts of National Geographic Channel’s “Known Universe” series) described the science behind the network, along with the extensive K-12 educational programs it will help support.
McDonald Observatory Superintendent Dr. Tom Barnes expressed appreciation to LCOGTN founder Wayne Rosing and the staff of LCOGTN (who previously provided funding and personal support for creation of the Wren Marcario Accessible Telescope at the Frank N. Bash Visitors Center), along with the many UT Austin personnel, from the University’s legal department to Physical Plant employees, who made the project possible.
Other telescopes in the LCOGTN network are operating or planned for sites at Haleakala in Hawaii; Siding Springs, New South Wales, Australia; Santa Barbara, California; Cerro Tololo in Chile; Sedgwick Reserve, California; Sutherland, South Africa; and Tiede Observatory on Tenerife.
