Part A consists of 19 short question and Part B of 7 questions. You are asked to attempt all 20 questions in Part A and 1 of the Part B questions.

Part A

What are the dimensions of the Galaxy?
What is the stellar population of a globular cluster? An open cluster?
What is the Cepheid period-luminosity law? Are long period variables more luminous than short period variables?
What is the Local Group? Who belongs to it?
How do elliptical and spiral galaxies differ?
What do Sa,b,c, SBa,b,c galaxies look like?
Who first measured the distance to the Andromeda (nebula) galaxy? And how?
What are the masses of stellar remnants?
Who belongs to Pop. I and II? Where are they relative to the Sun?
What stars become Type II SN? Of what Population?
What is the Schwarzchild radius? To what stellar population (I and/or II) could a stellar black hole belong?
What are pulsars? What is their connection to neutron stars?
What are quasars? Are they at cosmological distances?
What is the cosmological principle?
How is Hubble's law used to determine distances to galaxies?
Where was most of the helium in the Universe made?

Part B

What property of Cepheid variables makes them very useful distance indicators?
Why was the Hubble Space Telescope 'sold' partly on the grounds that it would measure distances to galaxies far beyond the range attainable from the ground?
What is a neutron star? Mass, size, etc.?
What is a black hole? Mass, size, etc.?
How is it possible to detect black holes?
What are the major differences between Population I and II stars?
How did these differences originate?
What is Hubble's law and what observations did he make/ that led to the law?
Are we at the center of the expanding Universe?
What is the zone of avoidance? How many ways can you make a star look red?
How did Hubble classify galaxies? Is his tuning fork diagram an evolutionary sequence?
What are the perfect and simple cosmological principles? What is implied about the Universe by the difference between these principles?
How is the age of an expanding Universe related to the Hubble constant?
